Departing Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri has turned down an approach from Zenit St Petersburg.
The Daily Star says Sarri is a free agent after leaving Napoli, who have replaced him with ex-Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti.
Zenit had given Sarri until the weekend to make a decision.
But it is understood he is waiting for Chelsea to make a move.
Current manager Antonio Conte has gone on holiday but his position is in the balance due to his strained relationship with club bosses.
The Italian still has a year on his contract. But Sarri is ready to step in should he get axed.
