Jermain Defoe says Tottenham showed great spirit to claw back a 3-0 deficit to lose 3-2 in the first-leg of their Champions League qualifier at Young Boys.
Spurs struggled to adapt to the artificial surface but showed resolve to claw their way back into the tie and now need just a 1-0 win to go through.
"We showed good spirit to come back," said Defoe. "Starts like that happen sometimes. I don't want to make excuses but it was different playing on that pitch.
"At the end of the day it is the same for both teams so you have just got to turn up and play and be professional.
"At this level, you cannot start slowly. We watched the video of the opposition like we always do and we knew it was going to be a difficult game. They're a good side technically, they pass the ball well and they are used to the surface. They made it really difficult for us in the first half. In the second half we passed the ball well."
