Tottenham are set to offer striker Jermain Defoe a new contract.

The Sunday Mirror says the England striker, who already had to battle with Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov for one of the forward roles, now faces even more competition for a place following the arrival of Darren Bent.

Manchester United are known to be keen on Defoe, who has also been linked with West Ham and Portsmouth.

But Tottenham manager Martin Jol wants to keep Defoe in his armoury and the offer of a new deal is in the pipeline.
