Defensive performance pleases Wenger as Arsenal fire five past Aston Villa

Arsene Wenger was happiest with Arsenal's solid defensive efforts in their 5-0 win over Aston Villa on Sunday.

The Gunners dominated proceedings at the Emirates Stadium to notch their fifth victory in a row in all competitions thanks to goals from Olivier Giroud, Mesut Ozil, Theo Walcott, Santi Cazorla and Hector Bellerin.

But for all Arsenal's attacking prowess, manager Wenger was most pleased with the overall defensive performance of his side who produced a third Premier League clean sheet on the trot.

"It was positive because we kept a clean sheet," said the Frenchman.

"We know we can score goals. We needed to be patient because they tried to stop us going forward. With time going on we had a chance to play through their lines and that made the difference.

"You cannot fault anyone's performance.

"We had a rigorous attitude defensively. Even at 4-0, 5-0 up people were willing to work back. We want to play collectively and offensively to the end.

"You could see that mentally for Villa the second goal was a big blow to them. They are in a difficult position."

The win saw Arsenal remain fifth on the table, equaling fourth-placed Southampton on 42 points, but staying behind the south coast club on goal difference.
