Debuchy relishes French support at Newcastle

Mathieu Debuchy was delighted to see Newcastle United fans donning French-themed outfits prior to Sunday's 4-2 win over Southampton.

The Magpies honoured the clubs new French arrivals by having themed pre-match entertainment on 'France Day' and left-back Debuchy feels it helped he and his fellow countrymen put on a good show.

"It was really good for us," he told the club's official website.

"It was a good initiative taken by the club to do that, and we came away with victory at end of the day, which is fantastic.

"It is something that has really touched me, the warm welcome I've received from everyone - the team, the staff and all the people involved with Newcastle. "

And Debuchy was quick to realise the significance of Newcastle's bitter rivalry with Sunderland whom they leapfrogged on the table.

"It was a very important win for us today. Obviously Southampton were right there next to us so it was important to get ahead of them," he added.

"And of course it takes us above Sunderland too."
