The Daily Mail says West Ham tried to sign Manchester City striker Benjani as cover for Carlton Cole on deadline day but failed because they could not track down his agent.
The Hammers also ran out of time to sign Bordeaux forward Marouane Chamakh, who remains a target for later in the season.
