Siem de Jong has asked to play for Newcastle United U21s to improve his match fitness.

De Jong has underlined his determination to make an impact with Newcastle United by asking Steve McClaren if he can play in the reserves.

De Jong, who came on as sub against Stoke during the 0-0 draw, told the Evening Chronicle: “I got a few minutes against Stoke.

“Hopefully I can continue with this. I hope to play on Monday. I want to get some rhythm because I haven't played for a while.

“I want to keep my fitness up. So I want to play. We will see what happens.

“But I am ready to play in the Under-21s."
