De Boer: van Persie will leave if Man Utd don't spend this summer

Former Holland international Ronald de Boer is of the belief that Robin van Persie will look to depart Manchester United this summer if the club does not bring in new players.

The ex-Barcelona, Ajax and Rangers attacking midfielder believes the Dutch striker is not enjoying his football at Old Trafford this season and that he is pondering a possible exit at the end of the current campaign.

De Boer told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show on talkSPORT that the former Arsenal captain, who skippers the Dutch side, may push for a Red Devils departure if David Moyes is not active when the next transfer window opens.

"Van Persie wants to compete for trophies and everything this year looks out of sight," de Boer said.

"It's very disappointing for a player of his quality. I don't think he's enjoying the football Man United are playing.

"He's a team player but he likes to play beautiful football and that isn't the case at the moment.

"I know he's come in for criticism but that's normal when you're the star player. People expect a lot from you."

Of the current situation at United, who sit seventh on the league table in the first season under Moyes, de Boer feels that necessary changes are required to improve next term and to keep van Persie happy.

"Man United need to refresh their squad," he added. "Some of their players have had fantastic careers but it's time to move over and let some youngsters come through.

"Robin feels that, if this is happening, he will of course stay. But, if there's no investment in new, young, great players from other clubs, then he will move."

30-year old van Persie joined United from the Gunners for around £24million in August 2012 and scored 26 goals last term as the Red Devils captured their 20th league title. He netted a total of 30 goals in all competitions last term and has thus far added 12 this season from 21 outings.
