DC United winger Nick DeLeon has turned down the chance to represent the Trinidad & Tobago national team.
The 22-year old American-born attacking midfielder is eligible to play for T&T through his father Leroy, a former T&T international, but has rejected an invite to camp as they prepare for a friendly with Peru early next month.
"I grew up here and it's always been my dream to play here," the 2012 MLS Rookie of the Year runner-up told Washington Post's Insider. "It felt pretty good to get invited, to be honest. It's a big honor. But I don't think it's the right time.
"It would be a huge honor to walk in his (fathers) footsteps but there's no need to rush right now."
He added: "It's in my blood. I definitely feel the island fever. But I grew up watching the U.S. national team. It's been a lifelong dream."
