MLS executive vice president of competition and game operations Nelson Rodriguez has revealed the reasons for appointing DC United's Ben Olsen as head coach of the 2012 All-Star team.

The 35-year old will take charge of the MLS select for their July 25 clash with European champions Chelsea at PPL Park after Peter Nowak lost the role when he was sacked by Philadelphia Union recently.

"Ben Olsen has experience playing in All-Star Games and he has guided his team to one of the best records in MLS so far this season," said Rodriguez.

"He and his staff also have a relatively short distance to travel and his club does not play a league match on the weekend after the All-Star Game.

"Adding John Hackworth at his side strengthens the group that will assemble and prepare our team for this important game."

Olsen will be joined by his DC coaching staff Chad Ashton, Pat Onstad and Sonny Silooy as well as Philly's new coach John Hackworth who will serve as assistant.
