David D’Apuzzo, younger brother of Newcastle Jets midfielder Adam, is trialling with the club.
21-year old David has spent the past two season with the Central Coast Mariners but is in search of a new club and has been training under the supervision of Jets head coach Branko Culina.
"We've had a few triallists with us, and they all did OK," Culina said.
"But we're not after OK players. We're after ones who are better than what we have.
"We're happy to have a look at them but we want to see if any of them really stand out.
"We do need a left-sided player, and David is one of those who has been training," he added.
"We'll see how he goes over the next seven days or so and take it from there.
"But I made it quite clear that the player we are looking for is either a back-up or to compete with Adam for that [left-sided midfield] position.
"So it's no secret. We just need a bit more cover on that left-hand side and another option.
"But at the moment, we're just having a look."
