Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish says Andy Carroll is still getting used to their system.
The striker played the entire 90 minutes against Braga on Thursday, having previously made two substitute appearances following his deadline day move from Newcastle United.
"Andy probably took as many balls on his chest as he did with his head against Braga, so we've got to play to his strengths but also to play to ours," said Dalglish.
"It will take a wee bit of time to get it working but the quicker they all gel with each other the better it will be for everyone and I think the signs are very positive."
The manager was also questioned about whether his No.9 would have a special incentive to do well against Sunderland having played against them for their north-east rivals Newcastle.
Dalglish added: "I don't think he will be particularly worried about where he makes his first start in the Premier League.
"If it's Sunderland then that isn't a problem. He's delighted just to be here and we are delighted to have him, so whoever he makes his first start in the Premier League for Liverpool will be a big occasion for him.
"He looked okay after the Braga game but I think he will be a bit tired as his shift lasted longer than our intentions were to play him - our needs meant we had to play him for that length of time because we were looking for a goal.
"We will see how everybody is and Luis Suarez will be available for us which is good, and we might have Daniel Agger who is chomping at the door to get involved."
