Current Man Utd stars outshine Beckham appeal

Manchester United chief David Gill says the club's successful tour of the Far East is proof they've outlived the David Beckham era.

In Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney, not to mention Park Ji-sung and Dong Fangzhuo, United's legion of Far East fans have other heroes to cheer.

"The reach of Manchester United goes beyond individual players," said Gill.

"If you look at the Beckham effect, the main area that did impact was in Japan. The other markets were fine.

"But Manchester United will always have top stars. The club has a history and a heritage to protect. We have always been associated with flair and excitement. Nothing has changed in that respect.

"We have Ronaldo and Rooney, while Nani has come on this trip and made a big impression already."

In a summer where almost a third of the Premier League's 20 clubs chased the Asian tiger, United remain arguably the biggest ticket in town. South Korea in particular proved to be fertile ground.

All 64,000 tickets for the showdown with FC Seoul were sold out within six hours and, quite possibly, more fans were wearing United's distinctive red shirts inside the stadium than they do at Old Trafford.
