Tottenham stopper Heurelho Gomes is not used to being on the receiving end of criticism from rival fans and players after the poor start to his Premier League career. The Brazilian was well respected in Holland when playing for his previous club PSV Eindhoven.

"Every single time I went on the pitch, I could hear my name being chanted," he told The Guardian.

"But it wasn't just the PSV fans, it would be the same from supporters of every club we were playing."

However, the 28-year-old has not been able to repeat his impressive performances in the Eredivisie for new side Spurs.

"It has been a very difficult time for me, it has also been a shock," he added.

"If you look back through my career, I've never had a bad period before, whether it be for Cruzeiro, PSV or Brazil.

"I know I have made mistakes, but I have always believed it is a bad period that will pass if I am strong.

"If I had ever thought I had become so bad I could not help the team, I would have been the first person to tell the club: 'That's it, I should go'.

"But I have always thought I will come back and be the goalkeeper I was before."
