Culina not taking risks ahead of Newcastle Jets' opener

Newcastle Jets head coach Branko Culina is not prepared to take any injury risks into the A-League season opener against Adelaide United on Friday night.

Culina has a few players who are not 100% ready to go and although he has been told by some of the players themselves that they are right, the coach will not include anybody who is at less than premium fitness.

"(Jeremy) Brockie needed to train late last week or at the latest today for him and Rooney to get to a level where I feel comfortable that I can put them on," Culina told the Newcastle Herald.

"At the moment I am not quite sure; certainly not from a starting point of view.

"Tarek (Elrich) is a little bit further behind, but he is such a good player that you are tempted.

"You have to be smart about it. It's a long season and the first game is not going to win the league for you. We will be looking at picking the players who have had the best preparation.

"You want to make sure the players are not underdone. At the moment we don't know."

The Jets take on the Reds at Hindmarsh Stadium on Friday August 6 - kick-off is at 8:00pm AEST.
