Crouch pleased with first strike for Tottenham

New Tottenham signing Peter Crouch opened his account for Spurs in the 5-1 Carling Cup win at Doncaster on Wednesday night. "It was nice to get a game, and I think all the lads who came in that hadn't played previously would have given the manager something to think about," he told the club's official website.

"It was a great performance from the lads and good to get 90 minutes from my point of view, because I didn't play too many pre-season games.

"I feel fit and sharp now and it was great to mark my first start with a goal.

"Doncaster are a good side, as we knew before the game, and they came out of the traps quickly. But in the end, our quality and some good finishing saw them off."

The England international knows there is competition for the strikers roles.

"I've obviously got to fight for my place here, but I wouldn't have joined had I not been confident in my own ability to take my chances when they come. Hopefully I showed that against Doncaster," he added.

"All top sides have at least four good strikers and if you want to play for a club like Spurs, you have to expect fierce competition for places.

"It's the same in all positions all over the pitch, there are international players waiting to come into the side, and that's why I came here."
