Croatia defender Lovren: France did not play football

Croatia defender Dejan Lovren has taken a swipe at France's tactics after losing Sunday's World Cup final.

The Liverpool stopper was also upset with the use of VAR for France's second goal in the 4-2 defeat.

"We were the better team today and overall we were better," said Lovren.

"France did not play football. They waited for their chances and scored. They had a tactic and you have to respect that. They have played this way in all matches. I am disappointed because we have lost, but also because we performed much better than France.

"We will regret certain choices that we have made, but that is no longer useful. Maybe we can put things into perspective in a couple of months.

"I was sure he would not give a penalty. My teammate did not have time to respond, that's impossible if you're so close to the ball. It was a crucial moment.

"The VAR must be improved," adds Lovren. "One time a penalty kick is given and the other time not. I really do not understand. Many people say that it was not a penalty, but what can we do about it? Nobody understands the rules."
