Crewe boss Davis targets non-league market

Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis is keen to work the non-league transfer market.

Davis says the transfer fees wanted by clubs for players in the Vanarama Conference has priced Crewe out of that market, which is why they are looking even further down the ladder.

He told The Sentinel: "We're always looking in the non-league, we have scouts that concentrate on non-league, right down to the North West Counties.

"That's become our market in many ways. The Conference and the players in that league, some of them are out of our reach.

"The better ones in that division are going for £250,000 and it's out of our financial reach, so we have to look lower down the scale.

"There are players spilling down into that league, out of Football League academy systems.

"They're 17 or 18 and playing men's football and they're the ones we, along with other clubs, are looking for because they can be a really good option.

"They're always out there, you've just got to get out there and find them."
