Crewe boss Davis hoping Arsenal's Aneke returning to best

Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis hopes on-loan Arsenal midfielder Chuks Aneke can return to his best after scoring his first goal of the season.

Aneke found the net with a superb diving header as he came off the bench to inspire a much-needed 1-0 victory over Crawley Town last weekend.

Davis said: "He's a lad that works very hard at his game. He played on Monday in the under-21s' 0-0 draw with Leeds and did well, and it looked like that goal had given him a bit of a lift.

"He had an extra spring in his stride, which was very noticeable according to (coaches) Neil Baker and Jimmy Collins.

"You can see the confidence that a goal can bring.

"I have been encouraging him to get in the box and win headers. He scored with a low one, and even if I have been on about him winning the higher ones, he still pulled off his man lovely.

"He was level with his marker when the ball was clipped in by Matt Tootle, but stretched out to get a really good diving header.

"You just hope that now gives him the confidence to do that more often."
