Crestfallen Hart: Man City beaten by a lucky Real Madrid goal

Goalkeeper Joe Hart felt Manchester City were agonisingly close to progressing to the UEFA Champions League final.

The Premier League club were beaten 1-0 by Real Madrid in the semi-final second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu tonight, losing the two-legged tie 1-0 on aggregate.

Over the course of the two legs City failed to create enough scoring chances - which was an aspect of his side's game that Hart concedes - but he did feel that the own-goal from Fernando, a byproduct of Gareth Bale's angled effort, was fortuitous for the home side.

"It's as simple as that really," a crestfallen Hart told BT Sport.

"We could easily be in the final, but they managed the game well. They got a lucky goal, they've beaten us with a lucky goal, it is what it is."

He added: "They created very little over the two legs, so did we, it was a close semi-final.

"We've come out the wrong side of it.

"They couldn't kill it off. We defended well when needed but we didn't have that little bit of edge.

"Kun (Sergio Aguero) announced himself late, but did we do enough to win the game? I don't know."
