Coventry off the mark with home win over Derby

Coventry recorded their first win of the season, defeating Derby 2-0 at the Ricoh Arena with the aid of a controversial penalty. Derby's Jason Shackell brought down Richard Keogh inside the area, although replays showed he had made clear contact with the ball.

Thorn said: "I think that has been coming and I have said all along that our points tally doesn't match out performances so it was a case of carrying on doing what we were doing."

"It was important that it did not become a nervy thing and I thought we were fantastic throughout. We moved the ball around very well against a very good side and we deserved out victory.

"At half-time we talked about how we could play more on the front foot than we had been doing.

"We were sloppy for a period of about five or 10 minutes but we rectified that. I told the players how much I believe in them and how much the staff believe in them.

"The supporters have been fantastic to me and to the team. This week we were back on song and had begun to find our rhythm.

"As a team we were right at it. Lukas was fabulous today and his professionalism and attitude was first class."

Derby boss Nigel Clough had no doubt the penalty decision was the turning point of the game.

He said: "Jason Shackell got the ball. I have not discussed it with the referee because you are not allowed to talk to referees.

"I might get a chance for a word 30 minutes after the game but all you get is a form to fill in and that's it. That's all you can do.

"I thought we created enough chances, especially at the start of the second half. We had a one-on-one but we did not manage to get that goal.

"We have got a local derby with Nottingham Forest next week but performances haven't been much different in the last than they were in earlier games."
