Uruguay have managed to set up a quarter-final meeting with hosts Argentina in the 2011 Copa America.
The Uruguayans required a victory over Mexico to finish second on the Group C table after Chile had earlier beaten Peru thanks to an injury-time own goal from debutant Andre Carrillo.
Alvaro Pereira got his side off to a good start when he pounced on an error from Mexico keeper Luis Michel to toe-poke home from close range in the 14th minute for his second goal in two matches.
Uruguay had the much better of the chances with Diego Forlan hitting the upright from inside the penalty box when he should have scored unmarked on the half-hour mark before missing another great chance in the 64th minute only to see his attempt whistle over the crossbar.
Luis Suarez was wide with his slider with the outside of his right foot not long after Forlan's miss and Nicolas Lodeiro hit the post later on, but in the end, Pereira's earlier goal was enough to down the Mexicans 1-0 and put Oscar Tabarez and his men through to the knockout phase where they will meet Argentina in Santa Fe on Saturday.
Chile, who overcame Peru earlier yesterday, now await the winner of Group B which finishes tomorrow after second-placed Paraguay take on group leaders Venezuela and Brazil meet Ecuador.
