Controversial penalty gives Liverpool a point

Birmingham will feel understandably aggrieved as a dubious penalty award enabled hosts Liverpool to scramble a 2-2 draw at Anfield. David Ngog was the villain of the piece as far as the Blues were concerned.

Firstly he put Liverpool ahead after a goalmouth scramble early in the first half.

But then with the Reds trailing to Christian Benitez header and a marvellous 30 yard strike from Cameron Jerome came the moment of controversy.

The visitor's had been under siege for most of the second period and were defending valiantly when Ngog drove into the Birmingham penalty area.

Lee Carsley challenged and appeared to make no contact, but the Frenchman fell theatrically to the ground and referee Peter Walton immediately pointed to the spot to the fury of the Blues.

Substitute Steven Gerrard ignored all the fuss to convert from 12 yards.

Liverpool continued to press but Birmingham's rearguard deservedly held out for the point.

The Reds stay seventh in the Premier League with Rafael Benitez still without a league win over Birmingham in seven attempts and his shaky start to the season continues.
