Wigan boss Bruce using Blackburn as transfer model

Steve Bruce will turn to Blackburn for inspiration when he seeks to find the right players to take Wigan to the next level over the summer.

Bruce has guided Wigan to the brink of safety since taking over earlier in the season but, like many managers plying their trade in the lower echelons of The Premier League, has seen his side hindered by a paucity of goals.

The former Birmingham boss is keen to rectify a problem that has seen Wigan hit the net just 32 times in 36 league games, and he feels Rovers boss Mark Hughes has set the perfect blueprint.

"That is where I would spend most of the money if I could source one," he said. "Look at Blackburn, who have found Roque Santa Cruz and Benni McCarthy for relatively cheap fees, they've got two strikers there who can score 20 goals in The Premier League.

"That is why Blackburn are up where they are, it's because of their strikers.

"We've struggled for goals this season - our top scorer is Marcus Bent with seven goals, three of them were in the same game. Then we've got people on five and six, so we need a few more.

"If there is someone out there who I think I could get, I would be knocking at the chairman's door."
