The powerful attacking midfielder made a positive start for the Light Blues since signing from Wigan, but missed last season's thrilling run-in with a serious ankle injury.
However, the 30-year-old is readying himself for gruelling fitness sessions ahead of the Gers' summer tour to the Netherlands and Germany.
The Scotland star told the club's official website: "On a personal level, I want to do a bit better and score more often than I did last season.
"I look upon the last 12 months as my settling-in campaign and now it is all about showing what I can do.
"Hopefully this is when people see the real me. At times last year, the football we played was a bit different to what I'm used to.
"It took time to adapt to that but I feel I've been able to do that and I'm ready to go again after a good break and give it my all. I'm really looking forward to it.
"Missing the first week (of pre-season) last season didn't affect me too much but being here throughout allows me to focus on things more."
