Asked what Robinson's reaction was when he gave him the news, McClaren replied: "He was relieved and delighted.
"Obviously his selection depended on his reaction and the other goalkeepers' reaction. I've been delighted with them all but Paul gets the nod for me.
"Of course Paul made a mistake against Germany. Players will make mistakes and are under pressure to deliver. But everybody makes mistakes. A goalkeeper makes one and it's in the net. Other players against Germany made mistakes and do we give them the same punishment? No.
"I've every confidence in Robbo. I trust him to do the job. In adversity, that's when the true character comes out. Robbo reacted very, very well to it.
"I hope he isn't busy! In every game, the goalkeeper has been called upon on two or three occasions to make vital decisions or saves. Paul Robinson will have to be fully concentrated and aware of that."
