The 24-year-old still has two years left on his current deal, but coach Martin Jol has revealed that chairman Daniel Levy is worried he will run it down to leave on a free transfer like Sol Campbell did six years ago.

But Defoe said: "I've just got to be patient and wait for my chance. I feel fit, strong and am fully committed to the cause. Everybody knows how passionate I am about this club.

"I'll keep working hard in training and make sure I am ready physically and mentally when called upon."
