"It is simple," he said.
"I have not achieved what I wanted to because what I want is to win a major tournament. That is what we all want.
"If I did not win that I would regard my England career as a failure. We have to try and win a tournament and we have to try and put that right next time.
"It was hard to watch (Euro 2008) this summer but we have to put that behind us now and concentrate on the next campaign," he said.
"Any time you get disappointments in your career you use them as motivation to succeed. But we do not want to live in the past.
"We just want to move on. We want to make sure we are firing on all cylinders next month when we start the qualifiers.
"But it is a rolling process. We are trying to improve in all areas and we will continue to do that as the games go on."
