The transfer of Jermain Defoe to Tottenham is under a cloud after an FA ruling has caused confusion.

Defoe signed with the Spurs from Portsmouth after formerly being a Tottenham player but rules have stated that there may be a chink in the deal.

"A Club which transfers or cancels the registration of a Player may not apply to register that Player within a year except with the prior written consent of the Board," the FA rule states.

Paperwork between the clubs remains unsigned meaning Defoe's current registration lies with Portsmouth.
