Emmanuel Adebayor has thanked Tottenham caretaker boss Tim Sherwood for showing faith in him.

The African striker scored twice for Spurs as they beat Southampton 3-2 at St Mary's on Sunday and was quick to praise Andre Villas-Boas' replacement who gave him his first league start of the campaign.

"He (Sherwood) told me 'Emmanuel, I know you for a long time' and he was with Harry, he told me 'I need you, get out there, play your football, I will not tell you anything, you have been around the block, Arsenal, Manchester City, Real Madrid', you know how to play," Adebayor told Sky Sports.

"For me, that was big confidence, the new manager telling me that, and I am very happy for him."
