England boss Fabio Capello has been working one-on-one with Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney leading up today's clash with Germany. The Mail on Sunday says Rooney goes into the greatest game of his life lacking both physical and mental fitness.
Sources in the England camp say the Italian has been working overtime to nurse Rooney for the big occasion.
Rooney is said to be only 80 per cent physically fit and, more crucially, struggling with the pressure of living up to his billing as one of the stars of the tournament.
"He feels he is carrying the hopes of the nation on his shoulders and he is conscious that he has shown nothing like the level of performance to justify being mentioned in the same breath as Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta or Cristiano Ronaldo," said a source.
