COMMENT: Newcastle Jets kicking goals off-field under new ownership

Football is a working class sport and Newcastle is a working class city and new Newcastle Jets owner Nathan Tinkler has taken the sport to a new level by reconnecting with its roots.

Since taking over from Con Constantine about a month ago, the mining and racing magnate has so far done everything in his power to help restore the region to its former glory.

From the first game at EnergyAustralia Stadium where he opened up the gates to children under 15 to gain free entry to the recent announcement that family ticket prices had been slashed, Tinkler and the Jets management are beginning to become a very user-friendly club.

Every club owner in Australia should take notice. The new kid on the block has just shown them up as not understanding the basics of football and the relationship with its fans.

Yesterday's decision to retain CEO John Tsatsimas as well as install ex-Cronulla Sharks chief Richard Fisk as corporate membership director put together the final pieces of a strong off-field set up which in turn creates success on the field.

Yes, the Jets may not be achieving consistently desirable results with just one win in eight matches but the right steps have been put in place off the pitch and that is always a very positive start.

News that the club is after a big-name European striker would give plenty of hope to the Hunter Valley supporters, who have known to be the most parochial out there, and the fact they now have funds to bring in a quality goalscorer indicates things are headed in the right direction.

As several clubs continue to flail in their off-field exploits, the Jets have gone from strength to strength in just under a month and much of the credit can be given to Tinkler who has taken a chance on the Jets and delivered football back to the community.
