COMMENT: Liverpool making statement of intent with early signings

The Liverpool Football Club have already notified the rest of the Premier League that they mean business.

Manager Brendan Rodgers has shown in the early stages of the summer transfer window that he is determined to strengthen his subpar squad while necessarily getting rid of some dead wood.

As of July 10, the Reds have added no less than six new players since the end of their disappointing 2014/15 Premier League campaign which saw them drop off from their second-place finish the season prior to end up sixth on the table.

The star attraction, so far, is promising Brazilian talent Roberto Firmino who has arrived at Anfield in a £29million deal from German club TSG Hoffenheim.

The 23-year old attacking midfielder joins fellow countryman Philippe Coutinho on Merseyside and is expected to provide plenty of flair and creativity across a potentially deadly front three under Rodgers.

Firmino scored 47 goals in 151 appearances for Hoffenheim and provided more than 30 assists after joining from Figeuirense as a 19-year old. There is no doubting his potential and Reds fans can certainly be excited about having him at their disposal.

Another big name to make his way to the famous club is England midfielder James Milner.

Played mainly on the right side of midfield at Manchester City, 29-year old Milner is predicted to slot into the enormous vacancy left by the departure of Reds legend Steven Gerrard in the centre of the pitch.

There are not many Englishman in the game who could step into those enormous boots but Milner has the temperament and ability to replace such an icon with at least the competency that will have supporters feeling assured whenever the ball is in his possession.

Up and coming striker Danny Ings has also made the move to Merseyside after coming through the ranks at Bournemouth and Burnley.

11 goals in his debut Premier League season with the relegated Clarets is certainly a pass but it would be remiss of Reds fans to bank on the 22-year old becoming an immediate hit in the famous liver bird crest.

The thing about Ings, however, is that he knows the value of hard work after spending his formative years in the lower divisions before joining Burnley in 2011 when they were stuck in the bottom half of the Championship.

His mindset will be to prove himself to his new teammates and ensure he has the respect of his peers, as evidenced by his decision to forego a low number and take the 28 shirt with the goal of working his way down. This humble attitude is sure to rub off on some of the more egotistical entertainers who cavort as footballers in front of the Kop.

Nathaniel Clyne is next on the list of 'ins' in what has already been a positive summer window for Liverpool.

The right-back will solve plenty of problems for Rodgers who at times played gifted German youngster Emre Can on the right side of defence while sending Glen Johnson to the left.

With veteran Johnson not offered a new deal and set for a move to Stoke City, the number 2 slot will be filled by Clyne who was one of Southampton's best performers in his 35 league starts last term.

The 24-year old, who cost £12.5million, will be one of the first players picked each week and has plenty of scope for improvement, having already represented England on five occasions. Clyne is a player that Liverpool can rely on well into the future.

Another exciting prospect, but not quite at Clyne's level, is teenage centre-half Joe Gomez.

The 18-year old has joined from Charlton Athletic with massive wraps and although he is not seen as an immediate fix, he will certainly benefit from a full pre-season alongside the likes of Martin Skrtel, Dejan Lovren, Kolo Toure and Mamadou Sakho.

Gomez is not expected to feature regularly for the Reds and has even been linked with a loan move to Derby County, much in the mould of Andre Wisdom. But don't dismay Liverpool fans, he is tipped to have a bright future and will only improve with more experience in the second tier.

And to add back-up in goals is Adam Bogdan who has a wealth of experience in the Championship with Bolton and internationally with Hungary.

The 27-year old may not be the big name that the Liverpool faithful anticipated but his arrival suggests Rodgers is content with Simon Mignolet as number one, meaning they can spend money elsewhere.

Additionally, highly-rated Belgian forward Divock Origi is now a permanent Liverpool player following his loan spell with Lille and is sure to add some excitement up front.

His permanency is likely to see Fabio Borini through the Melwood exit door alongside veteran Rickie Lambert and quite possibly struggling Italian Mario Balotelli who has not settled in 'The Pool'.

Owners Fenway Sports Group have already shown that they are prepared to spend this summer and if ongoing reports are to believe, may splash out a further £32.5million on Aston Villa star Christian Benteke.

His potential arrival, doubled with the probable return to fitness of Daniel Sturridge, has the Liverpool striker stocks in a strong position. (Provided Benteke joins of course…)

Much of the news surrounding the Reds right now is the contract stand-off with Raheem Sterling, who is desperate to leave the club where he has made his name.

Liverpool need to let the talented yet petulant winger leave if he has no plans to commit fully to the cause and with his exit comes a mooted £50million to use on Benteke and perhaps other talent such as Barcelona winger Pedro, Real Madrid midfielder Asier Illarramendi and Lyon ace Alexandre Lacazette.

Getting the new players in so early, as he has done, will allow Rodgers to quickly integrate them into the Liverpool setup which in turn will permit them to adapt quickly and be primed for another assault on the Premier League title as they did just two seasons ago.
