Jeff Cunningham yesterday became Major League Soccer's joint all-time leading goalscorer when he headed home for the Columbus Crew.
The 34-year old striker netted his 133rd MLS goal in the 90th minute to give Crew a 1-0 win over Vancouver Whitecaps and said it was a great feeling to tie the lead with DC United great Jaime Moreno.
"It feels awesome," he said. "I want to thank my teammates, thank the coaching staff and the fans for all the support over the years.
"This is a milestone that means a lot to me and for everyone that's been supportive of me throughout my career."
Cunningham, who has scored his MLS goals for Columbus, Colorado Rapids, Real Salt Lake, Toronto FC and FC Dallas, had been stuck in 132 since the start of the season and admits it was one of the longest dry spells in his career before breaking the drought against the 'Caps.
"This is the longest I've gone without scoring," he said. "It's been a lack of confidence a little bit. I didn't know when and how that goal was going to come but I'm pretty pleased the way it happened. "The team needed those three points and I'm happy to contribute in that manner."
