Columbus Crew chief McCullers: Warzycha bleeds black and gold

Robert Warzycha has been named head coach of Columbus Crew. The former Everton star succeeds Sigi Schmid, who left for new MLS franchise Seattle Sounders earlier this month.

Crew GM Mark McCullers said Warzycha has a "world-class knowledge of soccer."

"He is an ideal fit within our club culture," McCullers said. "He is someone who bleeds black and gold."

As a player, Warzycha was a midfielder known for his powerful free kicks. He made 47 appearances for the Polish national team and played five years in Poland before joining Everton of the English Premier League for three seasons. He played again in Poland for two years before joining the Crew.

"For someone like me, who came to play here, I was given the greatest position," Warzycha said. "I'm happy. I know that I made the right decision to stay here for so long."
