After missing the MLS play-offs for a third successive season, the Colorado Rapids have experienced a mini bust-up during the post-season.
Star forward Conor Casey stormed off the training pitch last week, challenging coach Gary Smith to trade him in what can only be described as a heated moment.
Clearly the emotions were rising and they go the better of Casey, who admitted to his frustrations.
"Obviously, a lot of frustration with the way the season ended, and it just boiled over," said Casey, who is playing on the U.S. team for friendly matches in Slovakia (on Saturday) and Denmark (Nov. 18).
Smith said it was not the reaction he expected from Casey, saying: "I'm disappointed with Conor. I didn't think that reaction was warranted."
And Smith added that it was time the Rapids players heard some home truths so they could improve their performances going forward.
"I don't like saying it, (and) I'm sure the players don't like being on the receiving end of it," Smith said.
"Sometimes, though, we do have to hold our head up and say, 'We weren't good enough.' And we weren't. Now, one thing I have never said throughout the season is that the players have not given everything they've got."
