Former Aston Villa striker Stan Collymore says Luke Young will regret his international retirement.

England boss Capello hoped to turn to Aston Villa right-back Young, 30, following Glen Johnson's withdrawal from the squad for Saturday's friendly in Qatar.

Collymore told the Mirror: "I think it is the wrong decision.

"We have seen instances in the past where footballers have been called in as fourth or fifth pick but gone on in some cases to have very successful international careers.

"In World Cup year I would have thought it was a fantastic opportunity for him to at least stake a claim and put himself in Fabio Capello's thoughts.

"So obviously I am disappointed - especially as there should be a relatively big Villa contingent in the squad.

"It is not as if he would be there without any team-mates.

"So I think he may regret retiring but players seem to making these hasty decisions about their international careers with more regularity nowadays."
