Stan Collymore has paid tribute to former Aston Villa boss John Gregory.

Collymore's rapport with Gregory was fractious during their time together in claret and blue.

But he told Villa's website: "It's common knowledge that John's view on my depression issue was different to mine during our time as manager and player respectively at Villa Park.

"So I was both flattered and honoured to read that John regarded me as the most talented player he had managed at Villa.

"It's nice to be able to return the compliment. Whenever I'm asked about the best coaches I worked with, John is up there at the top of the list.

"He was a hands-on type of coach who always made things very easy for players, so it was a great pity that we rubbed each other up the wrong way.

"But that's in the past. I have every respect for John because he is someone who has Villa at heart."
