Collymore: Arsenal fans wrong to believe they influenced Wenger over Ozil deal

Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore says Arsenal fans are wrong if they think they influenced Arsene Wenger in signing Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid.

Collymore wrote in the People: "I have spoken to plenty of Gunners followers over the past few weeks and some seem to be under the impression that Wenger only signed Mesut Ozil because of the pressure they put him under.

"They genuinely think that Wenger – an intelligent yet stubborn man, who has been at the helm for 17 years – has suddenly decided to discard his own beliefs and instincts to sign a big-name player because SUPPORTERS think it is the right thing to do.

"Sorry, but I’m not having that!

"Wenger has always said he will sign a player of genuine quality if he feels the price is right – and that is why I believe Ozil has now arrived at the Emirates.

"While Spurs and Real Madrid were sorting out Gareth Bale’s deal, Arsenal crept in to make some enquiries of their own."
