Coleman surprised by media hype around Tottenham winger Bale

Wales coach Chris Coleman is amazed by the media spotlight on Tottenham star Gareth Bale.

Coleman said he was happy for the man at the centre of the big summer transfer wrangle to improve his overall fitness with the Red Dragons squad but that he had no intention of playing him against the Republic of Ireland in Cardiff on Wednesday night.

"We've had a few more people here than usual - at training there were a lot of people there, I thought we had arrived at the wrong venue," he said.

"There was all the hype surrounding Gareth and whether he will move or not, so there were a lot of people there who would not normally be there.

"But we have just got on with our work, we have to concentrate and he trained alone anyway so we just got on with our own preparations.

"Just looking at the last two or three weeks, Gareth's workload hasn't been good,' said Coleman about the winger who is carrying a foot injury, 'so we can't expect him to come here and then go into a match against Ireland.

"It would be dangerous to do that. We respect Tottenham. We have a good working relationship with them and the medical team here decided it would be too much of a risk - and we're not prepared to take it.

"Tottenham have given us information on his fitness. He worked on his own yesterday. I wouldn't put him in a situation where he had to play the game.

"As strong as he is, as good a player as he is, we wouldn't take that risk with him."
