Colchester boss Aidy Boothroyd has swooped for West Ham United youngster Josh Payne on a one-month loan deal.

The midfielder, 18, will go straight into the U's squad for Saturday's visit of Walsall and could be in line for an immediate debut as Kem Izzet is doubtful with flu.

"He is a good young player who I think a lot of and is someone who we have been watching for a while," said Boothroyd.

"He has been on the West Ham bench five or six times, and if Kem doesn't recover before the weekend it means we could play him, David Fox or Antony Wordsworth in that spot."
