Club World Cup cost Moroccan economy $30M

The Club World Cup has hit the Moroccan economy hard.

Real Madrid defeated San Lorenzo in the final to earn a cool €5 million in prize money.

However, Akhbar Al Youm reports the country has experienced losses of between $20 and $30m following unexpected logistical costs that arose during the tournament.

The losses were caused by sky-high spending on transport and accommodation, principally for VIP guests.

The decision to move the semi-final scheduled to take place in Rabat to Marrakech was a further costly move, but one that was enforced given the poor condition of the stadium in the capital. The consequent distribution of free tickets did not help balance the books either.
