Club Brugge keeper Ryan not taking Australian status for granted

Mat Ryan says he is not the undisputed number one Australian goalkeeper.

The 21-year old Club Brugge ace is being widely tipped to be the starting Socceroos gloveman at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil but the former Central Coast Mariners young gun is not banking on that.

Ryan is up against Borussia Dortmund back-up keeper Mitch Langerak for that number one jersey under Ange Postecoglou but he knows he has plenty of work to do before he cements his place in the national team.

"I certainly wouldn't say the position is mine at this moment," he told SBS ahead of the friendly with Ecuador in London early next month.

"There's a lot of football to be played between now and the World Cup and a lot of work to do for anybody to secure that position.

"Hopefully, if I get picked against Ecuador in March I will be able to showcase what I offer but to say the role is mine at the moment would be wide of the mark."

Ryan has been in fine form at club level this season, conceding just 25 goals in 26 Belgian Pro League outings, to see Brugge sitting second behind Standard Liege.
