Club Brugge keeper Ryan lands Belgian award

Australian international Mat Ryan has been named the Professional Footballers' Belgium Goalkeeper of the Year for season 2013/14.

The 22-year old Club Brugge gloveman has been voted for by the Belgian league players to win the award for the best keeper in the Belgium Pro League following a stellar debut campaign in Europe.

Ryan, who is expected to be the Socceroos number one at the World Cup in Brazil, has kept 14 clean sheets in 38 league matches this term which has Brugge in with a genuine chance of winning the title.

After receiving the award, Ryan said: "I'm pretty overwhelmed and humbled to receive such an award.

"It's recognition for the season that I've had and very thankful to everyone at the club that's helped me achieve it.

"It's pretty special to be voted by the other players in the competition."

He added: "I didn't really expect to pick up an award, especially in my first season.

"I'm happy with the season I've been having and I just wanted to be consistent all year.

"It's always good to hear from back home when an Aussie is doing well overseas.

"Hopefully it can open up the door for some other Aussies to come over here to Belgium in the future."

The Blue-Black currently sit second on the standings, behind Anderlecht on goal difference, with two games left to play. Brugge take on sixth-placed RacingGenk on Thursday before hosting fourth-placed Zulte-Waregem on the weekend.
