Tom Cleverley admits Aston Villa wanted to spoil Steven Gerrard's FA Cup party with Liverpool.

The semifinal had been billed as Gerrard's chance to reach the final on his 35th birthday, giving the MLS-bound Liverpool captain the chance of the ideal swansong.

"I was aware of that,'' replied Cleverley, on-loan from Manchester United, to the Telegraph. "We wanted to spoil the party which is what we did. I wasn't surprised. We thoroughly deserved the win.

"Now we want to finish the job off."
