Clemence urges Liverpool to hang onto Reina

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Ray Clemence says it's crucial his old club tie down Pepe Reina to a new contract.

Reds boss Rafa Benitez is keen to secure Reina to an improved deal amid interest from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

England keeper coach Clemence told liverpoolfc.tv: "The best goalkeepers are consistent and he certainly is that, and the all the best goalkeepers are capable of pulling off very special saves at vital times in the game.

"He has proved over the years that he is capable of doing that as well so that is one of the areas that Liverpool do not have to worry about in terms of having somebody who is world class there.

"He is one of the best in the world, it's as simple as that.

"It's a shame for him really that Casillas is Spanish because I'm sure that Pepe would be Spain's number one goalkeeper. Casillas is such a great goalkeeper as well so it's difficult for Pepe at international level. I can relate to that as when I played I had Peter Shilton competing with me for England."

He added: "People keep ringing me saying he has broken my Liverpool records and I didn't even know I had those records! He is more than worthy of it and he's a top quality goalkeeper. I hope he remains there for many more years."
