Ray Clemence was influential in Aston Villa goalkeeper Scott Carson playing for England in their defeat to Croatia, it has been revealed.

The People says the decision by Steve McClaren to hand a debut to Carson - who subsequently let Niko Kranjcar's long-range effort skid past him for the visitors' first goal - came only after keeping coach Clemence lobbied hard on his behalf.
