Clemence backing England credentials of Man Utd keeper Foster

Former England goalkeeper Ray Clemence has tipped Manchester United's Ben Foster for a bright future.

Foster was the hero of the hour during Manchester United's penalty shoot-out win over Tottenham in the Carling Cup final, after brushing up on the Spurs penalty takers using an iPod - something Clemence would liked to have taken advantage of during his own playing career.

"It was fantastic. I wish I'd had one in my day and I might have gone the right way more often," he said.

"It was a great idea - credit to Eric Steele at Manchester United for coming up with it - and I'm sure more people will take that on board.

"But the important thing for England is that we now have five or six English goalkeepers playing regularly in the Premier League, whereas a few years ago we only had maybe three - all of whom were over 30.

"Ben has been brought to the fore because of the cup final, but those of us who work in the game have known about Ben's quality for the last four or five years.

"His problem has been the injuries that have riddled his career. They have stopped his progress, but what he proved in that cup final was his immense potential.

"For Alex Ferguson to put him into a game like that shows us how highly he rates him, and what he will want now is for Foster to push Edwin van der Sar all the way."
