CL progress a 'monumental achievement' - Celtic's Lennon

Celtic manager Neil Lennon has praised his side for qualifying for the knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League.

The Scottish champions beat Spartak Moscow 2-1 at Parkhead on Wednesday night to finish second behind Barcelona on the Group G table, allowing them into the Round of 16 of Europe's premier club competition, and absolutely delighting a very proud Lennon.

"It means a hell of a lot to the club," Lennon told Sky Sports 3.

"It is a monumental achievement on our behalf.

"For the whole club to be at the big table in the new year is a phenomenal effort. To get 10 points is a phenomenal effort.

"I thought we did not play well in the first half, got a break with the goal and then we were slack for their goal. But second half we were a lot better, created good chances; we had to go for it and thankfully it came through for us."

Gary Hooper's 21st minute opener was canceled out by Ari's chipped finish late in the first half before Kris Commons fired home from the penalty spot with nine minutes remaining after Georgios Samaras was felled in the area to give the Hoops the points required to finish above Benfica who drew 0-0 with Barcelona in Spain.
