City of Newcastle almost at full capacity ahead of Beckham visit

This week's visit of football superstar David Beckham and MLS club LA Galaxy has the city of Newcastle jumping.

Recent reports have suggested that any vacant rooms in Newcastle's hotels will be booked out this week as the Hunter region gets ready for its biggest football event in recent history.

Hunter Tourism chief executive Sheridan Ferrier said that whatever rooms were left would definitely be filled by the end of this week.

"We're expecting those to fill during the week," Ms Ferrier said.

"A lot are coming from Sydney, and we haven't got the figures through the airport for interstate visitors, but more than half the rooms have been taken up locally."

Media from the UK and the USA have inundated the Jets with calls, asking for as much media coverage of Beckham doing 'anything Australian' as possible with the visit a great chance to promote the New South Wales city.

The state government expects the Galaxy's visit to generate about $1 million as the entire Hunter region gets set to appear heavily on the international stage this coming weekend for the Galaxy's clash with the Jets at EnergyAustralia Stadium on Saturday, November 27.
